Caribou

June 21st, 2010

Good Morrow,

I’m sick of looking for a job today, so I thought I’d write a little review about Caribou’s new Album “Swim.” (http://www.myspace.com/cariboumanitoba) I am a big fan of Caribou, he has the most unique and awesome production of anyone out there. He uses an array of production techniques including sampling old records, mixed with live instruments and electronic composition. He is a big influence on me as a producer. His new album “Swim” definitely doesn’t disappoint on the production end. His open track “Odessa” sets the tone for the album with a swimmy, thumpy track that sounds like Whitest Boy Alive was mashed up with the Flaming Lips by Four Tet. This is by far my favorite track on the album. I love the beats on this album, but the songs are kind of weak and don’t really go anywhere other than continuing to add minor layers. While I like the sounds that he has produced and think he has created a strong theme on this album that is unlike anything he’s done yet, I think the songs from previous albums Andorra and Milk of Human Kindness are more interesting and catchy. It might be that I enjoy catchy songs more, but who doesn’t? Cool album overall and I hope he merges what he’s doing on this record in a more song oriented format in the future.

How the west was won

June 17th, 2010

Oak Creek had a great weekend in the mountains last week. We began the weekend by rehearsing all day at some crazy mansion up in Eagle, CO. It was incredibly beautiful and it was also the first time we got to rehearse so thoroughly. We woke the next morning and made an appearance on the local TV network “Vail 8” and got to play 2 acoustic songs. You can find them on our myspace at myspace.com/oakcreekband. We also got a feature in the local Vail newspaper as well. We played two shows opening for Frogs Gone Fishin and they were both very successful. Frogs is very popular out in the mountains, so it was exciting to see so many people into them. They seemed to really like our music as well, we got about 20 emails for our mailing list which is the most we’ve ever gotten in one night. Thanks Edwards, CO! We are now focused on recording in mid-july and putting out a stellar EP. We’ve also got an Acoustic EP we’ll be releasing before then as well. I’ll keep you posted.
Rock,
D
