Good Morrow,
I’m sick of looking for a job today, so I thought I’d write a little review about Caribou’s new Album “Swim.” (http://www.myspace.com/cariboumanitoba) I am a big fan of Caribou, he has the most unique and awesome production of anyone out there. He uses an array of production techniques including sampling old records, mixed with live instruments and electronic composition. He is a big influence on me as a producer. His new album “Swim” definitely doesn’t disappoint on the production end. His open track “Odessa” sets the tone for the album with a swimmy, thumpy track that sounds like Whitest Boy Alive was mashed up with the Flaming Lips by Four Tet. This is by far my favorite track on the album. I love the beats on this album, but the songs are kind of weak and don’t really go anywhere other than continuing to add minor layers. While I like the sounds that he has produced and think he has created a strong theme on this album that is unlike anything he’s done yet, I think the songs from previous albums Andorra and Milk of Human Kindness are more interesting and catchy. It might be that I enjoy catchy songs more, but who doesn’t? Cool album overall and I hope he merges what he’s doing on this record in a more song oriented format in the future.
Rock,
D
